NRA: Guns for Stalkers/Abusers OK, 1st Amendment Not OK

"Domestic abuser" brings up the mental image of some sloppy drunk bastard in a wife beater who, well, beats his wife. Most women and men cannot seem to grasp that women can be and often are domestic abusers, especially when it comes to abusing their children.
I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was "convicted" and not "accused", but you only have to look at things like Title IX to realize certain moral panics (like the rape "epidemic" in colleges) are enough to overturn the importance of due process for a lot of people. I mean, what are you, some sort of rape supporter or something? Do you love rape? Is that why you want due process for accused rapists? Obviously if someone is accused of rape or domestic abuse they are automatically guilty, you shitlord.

The loss of your little toy isn't a big deal. Much better that a domestic violence victim be freer from the threat of death than somebody who already had a restraining order issued against them be free of the deep, dark pain that comes from not being able to play with a favored toy for a few weeks.

All the diversions aside--and there are plenty of them being offered--you simply need to look at the basics of the case.

The NRA got the gov't to slap censorship on physicians--and that is exactly what it is, censorship--because they felt a physician simply asking a question to assess the household risks to a child was part of a nefarious plot to... repeat after me... aid in a gov't plot to eventually seize guns from decent, law-abiding, gun-owning folk in the U.S.

A plot for which they have zero evidence, only conspiracy theory. As usual.

Gov't censorship is a direct assault on the First Amendment.

Why do non-medical personnel get to dictate via gov't what medical personnel can and cannot ask?

Right? You can always just refuse to answer or say you'd rather not say. That is freedom of speech.

But outlawing him/her from even asking? Censorship. And remember: the "why" part is the dumbest part of the argument.

Let me put it in another context: say you are seeing a psychiatrist because you're severely depressed, or you've actually been put into rehab for suicidal thoughts/behaviors, and the doctor asks you if you own a gun. From a doctor's perspective, a very prudent/obvious thing to ask.

Not if the NRA gets its way.

I just provided you another reason, along with the reason a pediatrician would ask (just like asking about a pool).

Another great example: if a child were in a troubled home and DCFS were assessing the home for the child's safety, I would ASSUME they would ask if there's a gun there.

NRA says: nein!

Hey but the parents can sign the kid up for one of those Eddie Eagle programs or... something. Does Eddie Eagle accept SNAP cards?
