I don't think you should lose what is considered a right for a misdemeanour. That is just a workaround, to avoid addressing the larger problem: the Second Amendment.
Once again, I'm pretty sure every gun problem in the US could be adequately solved by abolishing the Second Amendment, which is quite possibly the stupidest piece of Constitutional law in the history of the world.
