How was Iraq better off under Saddam. They had one war which killed a million people, another one which made it more of an international pariah and destroyed its infrastructure, and two uprisings which killed 100,000 people.
They had the illusion of stability. Iraq is better off not existing. Just like Yugoslavia, because, the price of stability is only guaranteed by the personality of the leader, rather than the communities under him.
So hopefully in the short term, Iraq will splinter into three separate states, it will be a bloody awful mess, but we can only hope out of the ashes of what was Iraq will be three more stable homogeneous states.
