I've never played Warcraft but can someone explain why they all had to run in there after him? Couldn't they just have let him get killed and then executed their original plan?

Dunno. Some of those raiding guilds were pretty hardcore. They literally had no lives, no jobs, no nothing...so running some numbers doesn't seem so far fetched....
