I was exactly the opposite. Not only was Texas co-ed. I lived in a dorm that was co-ed (Jester East). Further more, my floor was co-ed!
Literally, the dorm was shaped like 2 "L" joined on the vertical axis. One half of the hall was female, and the other half was male. They was no separation. Literally, halfway down the hall, you'd have a guy's room, and the next door was a girl's room. The bathrooms (communal) were something like 10 doors apart. You'd grab a towel and walk to take a bath, and you'd be less than 100' from a girl who was in nothing but a towel walking from her own bathroom. Heck, if you were visiting a girl on that end of the hall (no checkpoints, no monitors, etc.), you'd walk past that girl in a towel.
It was nice.
