Should the POTUS attend General funerals?

The place for general political discussion.

You don't become a general officer without you and your family having respect for the President. Doesn't matter if you disagree with his policies, you respect the office. I cannot imagine a single General's family that I know refusing to allow the President to attend their funeral. It might have happened, but I find it highly unlikely. Military families of that rank simply don't put politics ahead of service.

That said, Obama should have been there. There are no more than 230 generals in the Army. Imagine the boss of a 230-employee company not showing up at the funeral of an employee who was murdered?

I guess I could get outraged about this but the problem is I've been assaulted for the past six years on literally a daily basis by right wing media with things I should be outraged about because Obama did or didn't do them. Literally every single day there is a new thing I'm supposed to be appalled by.

Even had he gone I can assure you that on FOX & Friends the next morning they'd be bitching about what he did or didn't say or shitting their pants because he wasn't wearing a flag pin.

I think the more pertinent "optic" here is that not only the right wing media but also the MSM media at this point are nothing but a non-stop funnel of anti-Obama stories. Holy f*** even the mess in Iraq has been spun completely away from the morons who got us into that in the first place who are wholly responsible for this to--what is Obama going to do about it now!!!! In fact, the morons who got us into that mess are the people the media have invited on to offer their criticism of Obama along with their worthless opinions about what we need to do now.

Obamacare dominated the coverage across all media when it was threatened by SCOTUS or when the website rollout was a debacle--now that it's been in place and pretty much working as advertised you hear: zilch.

It's not even beating a dead horse at this point--it's pounding at the skeletal remains, the meat having been stripped away five years ago. Meanwhile, the people doing all the complaining and pimping all the fauxrage have literally no ideas, no plans for governing, no solutions--only their masturbatory marinating in the stench of their own endless unresolved discontent.

Who even wants to listen to this anymore?

It's like the friend who won't shut up about the woman who left him six years ago and whines about still being single--nobody wants to hear it anymore.

It's basically stalking at this point.

it's difficult to say how much time was spent "not working" vs "not at the white house". i mean you could just do nothing at the white house all the time but that doesn't mean you're working more than another president because you "never take a vacation"

while these servants should have to work hard i don't care where they do it

he was a major general, and while rare for them to be KIA... it's because it's rare for generals to exist. the number is hard capped at 231, but, there's also a cap of 21% of that number being above 2 star general. as he was a 2 star general, that means that probably about 91 2 star generals exist if half of the ones below tha cap are 1 star and half 2 star. So that's a big number at least in terms of relevancy for the president to attend the funeral. as his position is commander in chief, his direct report secretary defense, whose report is chairmen of the joint chiefs. under them there are commanders for theaters which then command the various departments. we're still up in the 4 star general range (there's 7 of them) and then they turn to 3 star generals. there's about 40 of those people all commanding in similar level of roles before we get to 2 star general. i feel like getting mad about this is like getting mad that the ceo of mcdonalds didn't come to the funeral for your shift manager (and you work at mcdonalds).

so then the response is "well he was on the job". sure, he was on the job... but it's a job that people get kill and get killed in routinely
