Of course specs determine speed. The reason that Apple has similar performance for MOST people is that the closed ecosystem of Apple allows them to get performance gains, in the same way that a mid-level PC will perform the same as a next-gen console, even though the PC has far more capacity, because the console has been built and integrated by one company, and everyone who makes games for it knows that it will be played on the same machine, always, with only incremental spec differences.
But that doesn't even address capability. My phone has a custom OS on it, for instance, and it is at least twice as fast as ANY iPhone, even though it is already a year and a half old. So, again, SPECS MATTER. Just because you don't know how to exploit those specs to gain maximum performance doesn't mean that Android devices aren't better - it simply means that you aren't technically saavy, or have no interest in making your phone run the best it can. You just want something that works the same no matter what, which is totally cool. But let's not talk about performance, or technological innovation, or "how good it works" when, in fact, the performance of my nearly two year old Android phone absolutely devastates ANY iPhone, and will continue to do so for years.
It is like saying "Well, a Ferrari goes the same speed on the highway as a Corolla, therefore they are equivalent." Except in this case the Corolla costs twice as much as the Ferrari. You just aren't utilizing the device properly, which is fine if you value not having to think enough to tolerate getting ripped off. I mean it isn't even hard to make an Android phone perform amazing. It isn't hard to install a custom OS. It is insanely easy, actually. So this all goes back to my argument about Apple exploiting idiots for financial gain.
