It's a lack of choice though. The nature of the two party system prevents people from voting for other candidates. A proportional representation system might help, although it leads to a less productive government (although that may no longer be the case since it's gotten so bad).

The best thing that could happen, IMO, is for the Tea Party to form their own party. That way Republicans who are relatively sane can make "parliamentary" alliances with either the Democrats or the Tea Party, while also encouraging the Democrats to stay fairly moderate.
