those are good points and i appreciate what you want to do, but even if its a .000001 chance that a firearm will be necessary you don't want to be caught without one when if you do need it. i personally think the US is too dangerous for police to be unarmed except in special circumstances

actually out in the middle of nowhere can be one of the most dangerous places for police

statistical analysis doesn't really tell the whole story. an isolated area will may not be plagued by constant crime and still be a place where you may run into a hard case

and there are professional criminals to deal with, an unarmed mall cop on a segway isn't going to be able to do that job.

I think a better idea is adjust the scope of law enforcement to its proper sphere, educate and train the officers more comprehensively, and to prosecute police who break the law just like you would anyone else.

Also if our social institutions were not so venal the population wouldn't be so difficult to manage.

they are clearly comparable, because both are examples of police shooting innocent people

and when I compare the two I find the UK example far more egregious than the example presented in the topic

in the UK they just walked up and shot some random dude on the subway because of his race and without repercussion, on the other hand this guy made a mistake and the state is punishing him.
