100,000 dollars invested in renewable makes more energy than 100,000 invested in traditional energy. so yes, it is economical at this point. germany is, pun intended, nuking their power grid to hasten their transition to full renewable. munich is on track to be 100% renewable in 10 years. china is making a huge effort at renewable.

nuclear plants are expensive not only to build but to maintain. they take almost 50 years to make a return on investment and by that time they almost have to be decommissioned. they're large, they're dirty, and even the "clean" ones that recycle fuel? if you shut them down those sites can't be used for an epoch.

The new molten-salt reactors can be built for around $2 billion, produce 500 MW, with only 4 kg of highly radioactive waste and around 200 kg of stuff that needs to be stored for a hundred years or so (annual waste numbers). So they are way, way better than what we've used traditionally.

However, I haven't been keeping up on the renewable energy developments, so you could very well be right. Just the last time I looked into it, the new fission reactor designs looked really good.

This info is a bit dated but accurate. There are forces working on an improved version of this concept today. It looks like it will be affordable and safe.

Yes, I do, but if you are talking about a nuclear weapon, it does not make a difference how shielded the core might be, it will be destroyed. A point detonation of a 20kt weapon with a CEP of 50 feet and, yes Sir, it is gone.

nukes are air-burst and air-burst does not penetrate the ground enough to destroy something 50-100 feet beneath it.
