First off, there's no reason to ban a half-inch beard for security purposes. That's not thick/long enough to hide a weapon in. So if there are legit security concerns, it should limit length, not ban them outright.

If there was a religious requirement for a long, thick beard, well I don't know of any religion that requires you to meet a specific length for facial hair, so I'd say determine a reasonable length as the cutoff for safety purposes and don't allow anyone to grow it out further.

The issue being that you are supposed to just let it grow. There is no length requirements because you're never supposed to cut it.

The article says the issue is him growing a half-inch beard. If you never cut it, it would grow much longer than half an inch.

Meh. They are in prison. Personally, I am fine with some facial hair, as I've seen peeps with dreads at our local area prison, but they did go through due process which technically means outside of ensuring human basic rights are adhered to, these men have no rights. I couldn't grow a beard in the military and I got over it. As a side note, I never understood why converting to Islam in prison is a big thing apparently.
