virulence and transmissibility are generally invertedly related, as is the case here. each new ebola case is causing 1.5 cases, while each measles case would cause 10 new measles cases. while true it's gotten out of hand, getting the number below 1 (and thus causing an end to the epidemic) can be done easier than with a more transmissible disease

so will it cause a plague? no

will it kill millions? no. thousands, yes. but i doubt even tens of thousands

I think the Spanish flu killed tens of millions in the early 20th century. This may be a hang-nail compared to that... I hope.

And now there's another patient being flown to a hospital in Bethesda, MD. Supposedly that hospital has all the know-how and equipment to treat/contain Ebola.

Oh man. I was listening to CBC Radio this morning, and they had one of the ladies from Canada's version of the CDC on. She was towing the government line about preparedness ("We're ready for it.")

All of a sudden an army medic who specialized in infectious diseases gets on the phone and just f**k devastated her. It was the worst beat down I've ever heard. His wife is a nurse who just completed training for Ebola, and she was given a little face mask and some protective gear. Completely inadequate. So the army medic just ripped this chick apart, going so far as to give her a complete list of what equipment was needed, how much, and where.

I'd have laughed if her incompetence wasn't so terrifying.

there was a government shill on CNN today saying that training for ebola is actually bad because it takes time away from treating other patients so it makes sense why no one has had it yet.
