I would argue that the demand of the wartime economy is what kickstarted Germany, rather than any structural feature. The same can be said for US economic success - the devastation of Europe and being the only major manufacturing base left is what caused the post-war dominance. Which was continued, by the way, with spending on Cold War defense requirements and the innovations of the space program.

anyway germany recovered from an economic disaster related to heavy war reparations from WWI AND THEN embarked on a militiaristic course once the conditions had stabilized after the overthrow of the Weimar Republic.

If they could have reigned it in a bit they might have become a contender for hegemony, given access to adequate fuel sources. The ultimate social force behind wwi and wwii was that the central german empire was sort of locked out of colonialism's windfalls and only had the continent upon which to expand.

defense spending is 3.6-5% of our GDP. that's the entire defense budget. defense manufacturing is thus a fraction of that percentage. our economy is not dependent on defense. we are a service based economy. you should know this, as real-estate is one of the biggest percentages of our GDP.

germany recovered from an economic disaster? the nazis came to power because of the economy being a disaster. where the f**k are you getting this information from? reigned in? i assume you mean not invade russia? russia very well may have had plans of invading germany so the point is moot. and fuel was not their only problem or even the problem that caused them to fail. their tanks were overengineered, non-standardized, and couldn't be mass produced. on top of that hitler's obsession with giant tanks drove design resources away from practical solutions. the germans made like 1000 tigers. we made 50,000 shermans and we were in the war a shorter time. fuel is not why they decided machine tooling tanks was better than cast hulls and mass-produced parts. it's not why hitler delayed the battle of kursk and let the soviets dig in.

see you keep repeating claims that two people have shown you are wrong. defense spending is not a large part of our economy. period. us spending more than anyone else doesn't change that. and the black budget, by its very nature, is not an aspect of our economy.

why are you just throwing out names and topics as if they have any relevance to this? what does the autobahn have to do with your claim that the wiemar republic recovered from its economic problems? what does protectionism have to do with your claim that america is a wartime economy? why would i dispute things that you haven't even brought up until now and haven't even provided any context for? the answer is that you're just trying to sound smart so you can impress who the f**k knows.

no one cares about keynes or list nor do they have anything to do with what has been said so far. your claims, that i responded to, are demonstrably false. two separate people have pointed this out to you. we are not a war economy, defense is not a huge part of our economy. we are a service sector economy and we have been for a very long time. even in our hayday of the post-war boom 50-60% of our GDP was still based on services.

defense spending's big contribution to the economy has been regarding innovation....the internet, mobile phones, etc....all started out as military initiatives.

To be fair, I don't think the importance of defense spending to the US economy can be measured simply as a percentage of total money floating around. I am with most of you in thinking that Dharma is incorrect about just how important it is... however, we should all be able to agree that the defense industry punches far above it's weight class. As someone else pointed out, the internet, GPS, and other related technologies came out of defense spending. The advanced robotic research that DARPA performs will be crucial to maintaining economic dominance for the elites over the long-term. After all, you can't have a military-industrial complex without military-industrial capacity, and you can't automate peoples livelihoods out of existence without someone willing to do research that is initially unprofitable.

I think you can very generally compare certain aspects of the US and Nazi economy... however, even where there is some slight similarities, there isn't much you can do with that data. It is kind of a moot point, IMO, since even US military elites have been subjugated to the whims of global capital.
