well basically some people are deranged and when they see something big going down they like to feel part of it, even if it makes no sense as a coherent ideology. rather than terrorism, i think the mass shootings that occur every now and then in the US are a better analogy to westerners wanting to join isis and kill.
it's also why the same western jihadis get disillusioned so quickly when they end up in the middle of a god forsaken town in eastern syria and realize they actually had no clue what they stepped into.
the actual real hardcore transnational fighters (chechens, etc.) are a product of surrounding troubles in the region.
that said, isis is still playing it up, and they're still going to get whacked for their grandiose claims to spreading "jihad." more and more it seems to me that hubris will get the best of them. and then people will find other excuses to cut themselves, go on shooting sprees, etc.
