not an excuse at all. if you think mental state of a person has nothing to do with their motivations then you must be a revolutionary in the field of psychology.

striving is a mental state as much as it is one of opportunity. if you are demoralized, depressed, etc from unsavory life circumstances then there is a possibility you won't have the mindset and therefor the motivation to strive. denying this is like arguing for more bootstraps.
