I don't think we need one...but I think we're at our best with one. Without a focus, we drift. Without an external enemy, we divide ourselves into internal enemies and fight each other instead. Without competition, we slide into complacency.
Besides. The US is simply vast. And fractious. Most important of all is that we need something to at least semi-unify behind in order to avoid drifting apart. One wonders if the country would be better off in two pieces, now that all we've got to rally against is each other.
