Well early american politics were incredibly petty and borderline suicidal so in that respect conservatives are keeping the tradition alive.

If Congress and the Senate done their job years ago on immigration, (as they should have), dealing with the millions today wouldn't be an issue.
The hardest part of doing nothing is knowing when your done.
