Elected officials get paid what our elected officials determine, appointed positions pay what our elected officials determine, the military gets paid what our elected officials determine, teachers get paid...
I'm sorry, but in government, the purse strings should always belong to the elected representatives. There should be no employee extortion on things we determine are vital public works. If you want more pay, you have to appeal to the voting base or switch to the private sector.
Again, I have no problem with unions in the private sector so long as companies are free to contract or not contract with said unions. In the public sector, they don't belong. It is unrepresentative. It is undemocratic. If you don't want the pay, quit. If we can find others who will do it cheaper with the same quality, we should be doing that as this pay is a drain on the economy. Certainly there may be benificial results of public employees, but the pay comes from draining money from the economy, period. Where that drain can be reduced without compromising the intended goal, it should, always.
