Yeah it was a huge mistake because it wasn't actually universal healthcare, and was a bastard compromise.

It was a mistake because it didn't focus on maintaining or returning purchasing power of US citizens. In a strange twist of fate it ended up focusing more on what Republicans decry daily: debt and the deficit.
Since then wages have been flat or falling relative to tepid inflation and a commodity super cycle.
