Healthcare in the U.S. costs as much as it does for a number of reasons, but two salient ones are the astronomical administrative costs (associated with the mess that is Insurance companies hiring a 20 person squad to figure out what does or doesn't get covered in various cases), and the lack of a mass market buying system for most drugs and treatments (buying in bulk like you would under single-payer saves a lot of $$). It strikes me that a lot of those costs become reduced if single-payer could get effectively implemented at a national level.
