the Republican Civil War is like war of the Roses, it's been raging for generations.

the Dem's civil war will probably be shorter but bloodier, like the American Civil War.

The whole "new Dems" thing seemed fine a direct response to the Reagan era and the perceived ineptitude of liberal candidates. There is still this perception that embracing progressivism is a surefire way to lose. Obama somewhat disproved that for campaigning at least, but it's been since LBJ that anyone has given it a shot in the White House.
