Not many people serve in the military anymore. You had an entire generation that served in ww2 pretty much. Probably like 2% of american males have ever served now though, and unlike the past where Kennedy's made their son's go to war, the elite of today have no interest or business sending their kids into the military.

Military experience was only beneficial when character actually mattered as a platform. Since gotcha politics was introduced in the 80's, there is no possibility of a character battle because anything can be propped up, and anything can be shot down. It doesn't matter whether you were a general, or a car salesman, the general probably raped female soldiers, and the car salesman was a generous supporter of his local charities. There is no standard for election campaigns other than what can you float thats better than what's already floating. Therefore, military men aren't of much use to the establishment.
