I just don't see what qualifies somebody who's been a "war hero", to be president. Or why it's a issue or trend that people voted for someone who didn't didn't go to war, over somebody who has. People vote with their wallet, and issues concerning the country at the time. Plus, it's already been pointed out that almost every presidential canidate post ww2 has had military service, with the exception of McGovern, and he was still heavily involved in the war effort. Since the military became all volunteer, less than 1 in six Americans have been in the military, and less than 1% since post 9/11. So there's also the generational gap as well, since conscription was stopped.
