Any religion (or any group of people, be it religious or national) that has such a top-heavy control structure, with followers who are forbidden to question, is going to have problems. Look at Christianity back in the . . . well, pretty much any time pre-1700. Heck, perhaps even pre-1900. Crusades, witch burnings, expelling Mormons, Inquisition, etc.
