I don't see this as a sign of cowardice or weakness. At the end of the day, the theaters are in an lose-lose situation and could potentially be fighting terrorists who are capable of bringing down entire companies with the internet. If they release the movie and something bad happens, the media and court of public opinion will rip them apart. I can see the articles now: "Questions Raised after The Interview Premier" - where they will bitch and moan about how the industry should have never played the movie in the first place. If they remove the movie, the terrorists win.
It sucks, it really sucks. This whole situation is ridiculous but we can't blame them for taking precautions.
