It's an issue of balance.
From a personal perspective, the reason why I decided to start my own business is because I was getting pretty damned jealous that all my bros were able to afford to live life, while I was grinding it out in a minimum wage job. I wanted to be able to go out to dinner, to take vacations, to buy my wife something nice from time to time. Now obviously as a middle class person I had a lot of advantages - and I'd like to see a society where most of those advantages are either removed or compensated for. But it is through the drive to "get mine" that I improved myself and my life.
Thought experiment: if we removed the medal system from the Olympics, and merely showcased athleticism, would we see equivalent, worse or better performance?
