It's one thing to say "Look, I know that you want this surgery, but it is a huge change and you need to take some time to think about it. Wait until you're 18, just another year or two, and if you still want it, we'll support you and help you transition."

It is another thing to say "You're f**k and you're not getting it. No matter what you do we won't support that decision."

People seem to forget that all human beings are basically retarded until at least 25, and a substantial portion never stop being retarded at all. I highly, highly doubt that any 16 or 17 year old has the capacity to make such a drastic decision. The parents were right to say no at this point, assuming that was their logic.

Why can't they use your insurance if they pay whatever copay or additional cost there is?

The parents had the right to make that decision. At fourteen we think we know everything but when we reach our forties and look back we realize how little we really did know. The parents didn't accept his declaration that he was really a girl in a boy's body. I'm sure that this wasn't exactly unexpected to the boy. He was after all their son for 14 years before this revelation. His parents didn't become religious overnight.

It may not have been a phase and he may have thought it out very well. If so, how much longer before he was 18 and could make his own decisions? Parent's are not required to agree or back a child's decisions. They are our parents not our friends.
