Oh, and the whole argument about having a "choice" of ISP's is completely wrong, because the competition doesn't provide the same service. At all.
When it comes to TV providers you have legitimate choice. Cable, Dish, DirectTV, all offer almost exactly the same service for almost exactly the same price. THAT is a choice. People switch between them constantly just to enjoy the promotions. That is a healthy competitive atmosphere. Cable and Dish however, DO NOT offer the same service at the same price when it comes to internet access. Not even remotely close.
You can tell because almost nobody is willing to switch from Comcast for example for internet access, even when they've got a dish on their roof. The "choice" is nonsensical. The "competition" between the two purely theoretical.
I've moved recently, and in my new location we have a single ISP. And because of that, they can charge $90 per month for the shittiest 4Mbps DSL I've ever experience. Its a monopoly, pure and simple. I'll probably wind up paying over a hundred soon just because the 4 meg speed is making me want to pull my hair out already.
