Like anything with a strong or distinctive taste, it takes time to appreciate it. Have to keep trying it like with blue cheese, foie gras, etc

Perhaps. I have a bottle of 12 year old glenmorangie, and it's not too bad with water, but I still kind of get that "I just took a shot" feel after every sip.

Do you drink it with ice? Traditionally you're not supposed to and instead mix with water but I prefer it neat with rocks.

Unfortunately, whiskey has always seemed too harsh for me. I love what it does when beer is aged in the barrels, but I'm a bit of a wimp I guess.
