Cost of living is one of the lowest in the country where I am. Guess I am just a whiny liberal who thinks people should be paid a living wage.

Not necessarily. You have an unnecessarily high view of lower paying jobs. While this was the truth for me (I moved up quite quickly) some people get stuck for no good reason.

Cable is most definitely a luxury. If people can barely scrape by on minimum wage, something is wrong.
