If you do build a coop & run style, use river sand in your run. You can get this at any of those places that sell gravel, sand and mulch. I paid $10 for 6 of those large rubbermaid totes full. Keep in mind, the tote will be much heavier when full. I rake the river sand once a week. It's really easy to maintain. No smell issues. When you first build the run, it will still have grass in it. Let the chickens eat all that, then put in the sand.

How deep do you need to plant the eggs (chicken seeds), to sprout the chickens?

We had a couple chickens that went to "freezer camp," earlier this year. Most of my recipes are swiped from the internet and involve my crockpot.
