IF we were to assume the big bang theory was correct, which it appears to be the most solid theory right now, time doesn't necessarily need to have a beginning.
When we refer to the singularity, the point of origin of the Big Bang, we are describing a point where time itself hasn't begun to exist. It's convenient to think of this point as 0.0 seconds.
Let's say it's been 10 minutes since the Big Bang. Well, we can easily imagine perhaps 5 minutes after. Then maybe 30 seconds. Then perhaps 2 seconds. Then .000001 seconds. We can continue describing smaller and smaller increments of time, as we see fit, but we can never reach the actual 0.0, because we can continue going to smaller and smaller increments of time.
I like to think of it being similar to a limit in calculus.
In this respect, it can indeed continue to go on forever. Time and the universe are infinite. I think you're having a difficult time dealing with the vastness of the universe and it's mysteries. I understand and respect that. But a lack of comprehension on my, your, or our species part does not equate to some mythical figure invented by our species. You can question the nature of the universe. Just don't throw your hands to the sky and submit to mysticism because you don't understand something completely, or posit that it must be a certain way that isn't even possible to be verified.
I also think it's worth noting that the expansion of time is also the expansion of space.
