The analysis ex is talking about (I believe) shows that the speeches have been dumbed down quite a bit over the generations. The explanation for this is quite simple though. With the rise of broadcast and all the other communication tools we now have, the audience for presidential speeches has changed quite a bit. Before we had recording and broadcasting technology, you either had to go to the speech in person or sit down and read a transcript. Now any idiot with a tv or a computer has it delivered to them without having to read a single word. The lowest common denominator is now much lower.
