I tell people at my work when they are selecting the investment options for their 401ks to just select the option that tracks the S&P 500 with the smallest expense ratio (.05-.1%) or something like that. Your average american pays .78% in expense fees in their 401k.
Advisers are predominantly glorified salespeople that take an additional 1-2% on top of the fee for whatever index fund they dump the money into.
