Don't stay in the Hinterlands. 
I did Path of Exile last year. Completed the single player. Solid game, plot not very coherent. No ending.

The game really opens up fast if you just get on with it. Its actually a design flaw IMO, making the first area a massive time sink full of MMO style quests and collectibles. You've got some awesome party members to recruit.
