The way to win LGBT acceptance is through education and by example. The community has to teach the public that they have nothing to fear from them. They aren't going to steal their children away. There is no threat from guys forcing guys or girls forcing girls. Gayness isn't contagious. When they can get people to understand that they are just people who have a different preference, but still just people, they'll start seeing people say, "That's Robert and Stan over there," instead of quickly walking away muttering things, like "fags," under their breath.
Will it someday gain acceptance even in the south without this? Yes, but it will be a damn long time.
