Clearly Mathurin, you are unaware that as a percentage of the population German and Japanese workers, including in the automobile market, enjoy considerably more collective bargaining rights. A little less than 20% of the Japanese labor force consists of unionized members. Germany is a more fickle statistic because workers actually get a direct say on the corporate board, but 25% of the working population is unionized.
The "Big Three" were simply outdated in all aspects - including management. The writing on the wall came in the early 2000s, which is why the Autoworker Union agreed to ending old pension plans and reducing the minimum wage years prior to 2008-2009. I had friends in Detroit who joined on for $16 an hour when you could at one time expect $20. But it's easier to poke fun at the smaller guys when you're a prole aspiring for the petite-bourgeoisie lifestyle.
We'll be reduced to serfdom soon enough by our capitalist overlords if people keep apologizing for their behavior and eating their own. Oops, letting slip that class warfare thing. Better watch more television and take more (prescription) pills.
