the have essentially beat unto submission the syrian army as well as the iraqis, who were trained and equipped by the US. it required intervention by the west to halt it, and at best it's slowed the expansion

America had a good relationship with Iran for most of it's history, actually. It wasn't until the 40s that it fell apart.
