First cause was the collapse of Labor supremacy in the 70s, brought about by domestic corruption, one of the worst old boys systems imaginable, and the creation of Likud itself, which resulted in a rightwing voting bloc.
Second cause was the deliberate and calculated exposure of Israeli settlers to dangerous situations. Under Sharon and his cronies, new immigrants were settled in highly contested areas, and tensions were stoked by a combination of Israeli government neglect (they did very little to calm conflicts) and constant terrorist attacks on the Palestinian population.
Third cause was what I call "The Tea Party Effect." In order to maintain a coalition, Likud has had to continuously appease extremists. Every time any real effort to settle the conflict comes about, it is thwarted by the extremist factions of Likud, who represent at most 40% of its members, but who hold a tremendous amount of power. In fact this effect was the reason why Sharon and Netanyahu always bickered - any Likud actions that didn't satisfy the extremists were undermined constantly, to the point that Netanyahu led the group that was the first to abandon the political leadership of the country, after the Gaza withdrawal.
Basically you can draw a lot of similarities between Israel and what's happened to the GOP.
