In response to Spider's point about definitions (and I know you said you already have the definitions provided by the district) I think you might want to briefly do the kids a favor by giving a little practical context about these definitions as well. This might not help them learn the content in the text, but I think it's a great disservice to just teach kids, for example, that socialism is a system in which the means of production are collectively owned and leave it at that. Even if a high school student is smart enough to get his head around this concept (and most aren't), it's not a practical explanation for socialism in the context of our society. Just like so many kids are taught that we have capitalism in America, and then get confused as f**k when someone eventually tells them we have a lot of socialized elements of our economy. It would really benefit them to understand that we have a hybrid system that includes both capitalist and socialist elements before they either grow up thinking that we're strictly capitalist like so many in this country believe.
