Trump is channeling anger. It's not so much that people agree with him on the issue as it is that his attitude and sentiments resonate with their frustration. Trump is amplifying the situation, but this would have been a thing with or without him in the GOP primary. What all the establishment candidates, including the Dems, need to take away from this is not anything specific to immigration, but rather an understanding of how fed up the public is with politicians. Yeah, I know, what's new right? Well this goes a bit beyond recent elections, but it's not the first time we've seen it. The comparisons to Ross Perot are apt. A guy who really isn't a politician is appealing to lots of people right now, even if he's running on a platform of insanity. If Trump decides not to run in the general, I wouldn't be surprised to see some opportunist with a source of reasonable funding to pick up the torch. Especially if the general candidates are Bush and Clinton.
