I'm fine with taxing it, but it doesn't need to he very steep. Unfortunately we have enough dumb people that want to do it, so lets make money off of them.

As someone currently in the process of quitting, I think artificially increasing the price definitely acts as a motivator. I used to buy 5 packs a week, which is like 60-70 dollars here in NYC cause of high taxes. I'm not gonna go out looking for Eric Garner to sell me some black market cigs, so when I don't smoke I have an extra almost 300 dollars a month for not smoking. For me at least, it worked that I internalized the high cost while I was still smoking and then viewed it as a nice influx of extra cash for quitting.
