Should Taxes be Placed on Cigarettes?

the effects of addiction, the longevity of cravings, the strength of cravings, all affect relapse and how far people are willing to go for something. hard drugs and cigs are on entirely different plains. even then, how big of a market is it going to create? 25 to 30 percent of americans smoke. how many do you think are going to start buying illegal cigs instead of just quitting or getting a vaporizer? probably not many.

Prohibition doesn't work, but what ever floats your boat. You have at it and ban tobacco.

Prohibition would work for cigarettes. Many smokers were like me - wanting to quit but constantly giving in to urges cause there's always a convenience store at the end of the block that will happily sell you your fix. Sure, it's more complicated than that, but if I had to go to some drug dealer every time I wanted a cig, quitting would be a lot easier.

I'm 6 weeks without a cig even though I can buy them across the street. I don't favor outlawing tobacco, but when I was struggling to quit in the past there were times when it would have made things easier.

just keep in mind that you are personally motivated, not legally motivated.

you might not be so motivated if it was some state edict and you didn't want to quit.

your personal story is thin anecdotal evidence.

And don't forget, where a buck can be made, there will be people to seize the opportunity.

you would likely be drawing cheers if you were in a support group. but in a discussion about whether or not prohibition works, probably not, except by people that agree with the premise. But history says no.

I was also economically motivated because a pack of cigarettes costs 12-14 dollars here.
