How would it work if the speaker wasn't a house member? I assume he would have the same budget and agenda setting powers but wouldn't be able to vote on anything?

Boehner "negotiated" with Obama? That's setting the bar awfully low. MAYbe he talked to Obama on a few things but the tea party demands that Obama never be negotiated with.

And if that means shutting down the gov't and running the country into the ground then so be it--Obama must be defeated. I think Boehner got tired of that and their demands.

They want to burn down the country before run it with Obama, something that even a dick like Boehner couldn't get behind.

Does anybody not think the timing of this has something to do with the looming gov't shutdown over their latest jihad against Planned Parenthood?

i think boehner and obama had a pretty good working relationship. the major hiccup was the breakdown over the budget a few years ago, but the blame was more on obama on that one (although also on boehner). there's been lots of articles about it.

Yeah Boehner was certainly willing to negotiate with Obama. He just wasn't able to deliver his caucus' votes do negotiations were fruitless.
