I wonder how this would play out in other countries were the same thing to be uncovered. Which I find myself asking a lot these days--"other" also meaning "sane."

Here's an interesting question: how many Democrat-led investigations were there during the Bush years? Because I can't think of any.

That's a good point, I don't think even the Katrina debacle merited an investigation.

The thing is that these investigations shouldn't be focused on "Who can we blame?" but rather "WTF happened here and how can we avoid it in the future?". If someone's misconduct is incidentally uncovered in the course of that, deal with it as it comes up.

And here's the other thing: regardless of McCarthy's gaffe, Republicans will insist up and down that's exactly what happened with Hillary Clinton in this investigation.

You would think if there was an embassy in a place that was NOT your friend, you would need a little extra protection without the need for pleading for it. Apparently those in charge thought everyone was sitting around holding hands and singing kumbia while watching the unicorns. Then, all of a sudden WHAM!!! Reality returns.
