and if you don't wear protection over 140 you can instantly damage your ears. pretty sure my father's hearing loss is attributed to hunting and serving on, among other vessels, a battleship where they fired 16in shells (which are awesome to watch and hear and feel fire, although i was like 10 and they make you go inside, and put on inner ear protection, and mickey mouse ears, and it's still loud as hell)

the reasons for suppressors on handguns are the same as suppressors on long guns, but the reasons for handguns are typically self defense against criminals rather than hunting and defense against tyranny

the feds put a 30 year mandatory miniumum for commission of a "crime of violence" with the use of a silencer. between 1995 and 2005, 136 convictions were made regarding silencers, including possession of silencer illegally being the only charge, out of 156 total cases. so, 15 cases a year.

there were 5 cases in 10 years that had anything to do with murder. most all were drug trafficking. and most weren't even being used, they were just present, i.e., during a drug raid
