Also, the best part is that an ISIS bomb would be insanely advantageous for Putin. If there was ever any doubts about Syria before, they'd be erased after. This narrative that Putin would suffer some sort of credibility or political loss makes zero sense. He lives for opportunities like this.

The Russian public isn't all that keen on foreign endeavors that are without some level of animosity towards the West. Moreover, Russians don't like being lied to regarding cause of death of loved ones...suspicious numbers of casualties are coming back as suicides and the relatives aren't buying all of it.

So there's that. I don't see how the bombing or the military involvement of Russia in Syria can be perceived as anything other than desperation at this point. They just don't want to lose that naval base. And in the process are over-extending themselves.
