The Russian public isn't all that keen on foreign endeavors that are without some level of animosity towards the West. Moreover, Russians don't like being lied to regarding cause of death of loved ones...suspicious numbers of casualties are coming back as suicides and the relatives aren't buying all of it.
So there's that. I don't see how the bombing or the military involvement of Russia in Syria can be perceived as anything other than desperation at this point. They just don't want to lose that naval base. And in the process are over-extending themselves.
