Turkey was absolutely in the right here, at least based on the current available evidence.
The issue is whether or not NATO will war with Russia over Turkey. And the answer is "The US would war with Russia under the auspices of NATO, but nobody else will lift a finger." Which is true. So the idea of NATO folding if there is no response to further Russian aggression is, of course, juvenile. NATO is a political organization composed of nation states that pursue their own interests - the idea that it actually functions according to its charter, where an attack on one is an attack on all, is lulz levels of immaturity. It's basically a way for weak countries to try and get some assurances from the US, without actually be obliged to do anything for themselves. That won't change even if Russia bombs a few Turkish towns and the West does nothing.
This will get calmed down pretty quickly. Strong diplomatic words followed by Russia f**k with Turkey wherever it can, like it usually does. The US will keep its missiles there or send in a few more. Then the public and all the Russian-boners here will forget about it in a month or two.
