it's not really our own physical safety, its the physical safety of people we care about, that compels people to arm themselves. so, using your same line of thinking, we just care about other people more than you

First, many ARE doing something.
Second, again, why are we putting any burden on innocent normal people to "do something" in response? Why can't they just live their lives? You're basically talking collective punishment which is absurd. People should be judged on their own actions and beliefs.
