what disaster that would be for russia. even if it was just turkey going it alone, half the russian fleet would be trapped in the mediterannean, a significant amount of planes in syria, supply lines to both cut off, and no easy way to get ground forces there and any kind of bombing runs from russia would have to go over the open black sea.

Yeah...Russia's geographic situation is spectacularly bad. Nearly boxed in, ice to north, pissed off Turks to the south.
